Washington Township is the rural heart of southwestern Morris County: a 45-square-mile landscape of preserved farmland, wooded ridges, historic villages and the long valley of the South Branch of the Raritan River. Washington Township was incorporated from portions of Roxbury Township under New Jersey's Township Act of 1798. Its geography helped shape its identity: the eight-mile valley along the South Branch of the Raritan River supported a Palatine German farming community, while Schooley's Mountain became known for mineral springs, inns and mountain settlement.
